Unheated Terminated Pleiochroic Blue to Purple Tanzanite from Merlani Hills in Tanzania. Found on any rarest top ten gemstone list Tanzanite is a highly coveted gem both for its beauty and its rarity. It is a variety of Zoisite found exclusively around the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Tanzanian government has dramatically reduced mining access attempting to be the sole distributor of the gem making the Tanzanite #1 Mine the only open mine. This mine has recently collapsed and production of newly unearthed Tanzanite has plummeted with nearly all quality specimens being broken and cut into the much more profitable gemstone thus making specimens like this few and far between at best. This is a tabular crystal with a complex termination and nice pleiochroism.
